Before experts arrive, steps can be taken inside the home or business to reduce the damage, such as when you see water building on the ceiling (looks like a wet bulge) poke a hole in the center of it and place a bucket under it to catch the water.  Next find the entry point in the attic (if you can- sometimes it’s not visible) and fill it with plumbers’ putty or anything else that might plug it temporarily. Finally maintain your fix till we can safely mount your roof. During desperate situations, when the rain is pouring down in buckets, use an ax on the underside of the roof deck and make a small hole big enough to push a tarp and bricks through to stave off the downpour in the house. You have to place one edge of the tarp above the hole in the roof, put the bricks down to hold it and then run a seam of plumbers’ putty on what edges you can as you pull the tarp over the hole.
